Floodwaters entered 16 Assam districts and affected more than 2.52 lakh people till now, while the official death toll raised to 16 after one more people died, said State Disaster Management Authority, officials.
The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are flowing at the danger level in many places of the state which resulted in flooding. Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Nagaon, Golaghat Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts according to the data released by the PTI.
Besides, in the Capital city Guwahati, the river crossed the danger mark on Friday. an official of the Central Water Commission told The Sentinel. Bhramapurtra danger level stands at 49.68 meters and presently the river was flowing at 49.74 meters.
The state government set up 142 relief camps in all affected districts in which a total of 18,234 people are staying in it. Dhemaji district is the worst hit with 88,269 people in 215 villages affected and Tinsukia district seen 59, 261 people in 146 villages displaced.
Also, there were reports of landslides in three districts and Kamrup metropolitan near to Guwahati where people live in landslip-prone areas are advised to shift safer places. A report said 12,000 hectares of agriculture land with the crop is flooded
Floodwaters also entered the Kaziranga National Park, inundating 78 of the 183 anti-poaching camps. The sanctuary is house to one-horned Indian rhinos and 1500 wild buffaloes and thousands of hogs are now affected by the floods. Park authorities imposed strict restrictions, to prevent animals from escaping.
“A rhino has died. Rhinos, elephants, deer, and other animals have started moving toward the Karbi Anglong hills, which is the natural route for them during floods,” park director P. Sivakumar told The Hindu.
