Doubling the Farmers Income is the need of the hour. The academic institutions also would like to contribute towards the social cause and strengthening the hands of the farming community.
The university will all carry out survey to find out the per capita income of farmers so that appropriate strategies can be framed for doubling farmers income within stipulated time frame. Assam agriculture university, Jorhat to carry out comprehensive survey on the status of Rural Primary Markets (RPMs) to understand their functioning and infrastructural facilities available and gaps. The suggestion for the survey was made by Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture during their visit to state recently.
According to an official statement, “At the initiative of Dipok Kr. Barthakur Vice Chairman, State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam a discussion with Vice Chancellor Assam Agriculture University Jorhat was held and it was decided that Assam Agriculture University with its vast experiences and expertise in the field will carry out the surveys.”
Once done the State Government will have a very exhaustive and reliable database to chalk out development strategies and work plan to deal with the adversaries and other hindrances normally faced in implementation of ambitious schemes and projects taken up by State Government in general and Agriculture and allied departments in particular.
The surveys are expected to cover all the major issues faced by the farmers including floods and dry spells, primitive methods and implementation, rapid deforestation and soil erosion, Inadequacy of irrigation facilities, Low crop intensity, problem of storage & marketing of agricultural products.
