Dr. Rattan Lal, a distinguished soil scientist at The Ohio State University, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity for his exceptional contributions to global food security, climate resilience, and ecosystem protection. This recognition underscores his pioneering work in advocating for a soil-centric approach to agriculture, which has garnered worldwide acclaim for its effectiveness across diverse climates and geographies.

Lal, who serves as a Distinguished University Professor at Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), and as the founding director of the CFAES Rattan Lal Center for Carbon Management and Sequestration, has been instrumental in integrating sustainable practices into agricultural systems. His innovative methodologies emphasize the crucial link between soil health, environmental sustainability, and human well-being.

In a statement announcing the award, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation highlighted Lal’s role in advancing sustainable agriculture, stating that his efforts have not only enhanced food security but also contributed significantly to mitigating climate change impacts. Lal's research, spanning decades, has focused on carbon sequestration in agricultural soils, playing a vital role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and combating global warming.

President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. of Ohio State University expressed his congratulations, describing Lal as a transformative figure whose work exemplifies the university's commitment to impactful research and global leadership in agriculture. Lal’s journey from a small farm in northern India to becoming a global authority in plant sciences and agronomy is a testament to his resilience and dedication to sustainable farming practices.

Reflecting on receiving the Gulbenkian Prize, Lal expressed both surprise and gratitude, noting the award's significance in recognizing his service to humanity. He humbly acknowledged the role of Ohio State University in his career success and announced his decision to donate his share of the prize money, $350,000, back to the university to support scholarly exchanges with international institutions, starting with those in India.

Lal's accolades include several prestigious awards such as the Japan Prize, the World Food Prize, and the Padma Shri award, highlighting his global impact and leadership in sustainable agriculture. His commitment to fostering collaboration between academic institutions underscores his belief in the power of education and research to address global challenges.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, shared this year with the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming initiative (India) and the SEKEM initiative (Egypt), recognizes individuals and organizations making outstanding contributions to humanity. Lal’s dedication to advancing sustainable agricultural practices continues to inspire future generations of scientists and policymakers worldwide.

As he looks ahead, Lal remains committed to his mission of promoting sustainable soil management practices that ensure food security while safeguarding the planet’s natural resources. His ongoing efforts serve as a beacon of hope for a more resilient and sustainable future for agriculture globally.
