Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model, developed by ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), Chennai, on August 23, 2025. The initiative is a collaboration between ICAR-CIBA, the Society for Eradication of Rural Poverty (SERP), and the state government.
The project was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Action Plan on Seaweed Cultivation Programme.
Speaking at the launch, Naidu said the integration of seaweed with shrimp farming would revolutionize coastal aquaculture by improving water quality, enhancing nutrient recycling, and generating additional income, particularly for women Self Help Groups (SHGs).
The MoU was signed by V. Karuna, IAS, CEO of SERP, and Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director of ICAR-CIBA, in the presence of the Chief Minister.
Dr. Lal noted that ICAR-CIBA’s research on cultivating Gracilaria species of seaweed alongside shrimp farming has shown impressive results, including a 3–8 fold increase in seaweed biomass and improved shrimp growth. He added that the model is cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and enhances farmers’ income without requiring extra investment.
To implement the programme, 30 trained SHG women are receiving technical support from ICAR-CIBA. During the event, Naidu virtually interacted with these women farmers, who shared their positive experiences and spoke about new livelihood opportunities arising from seaweed farming.
The initiative, designed as a public-private partnership, aims to establish replicable, farmer-centric models of responsible aquaculture while promoting Andhra Pradesh’s Blue Economy vision.
