A Cyclone May Hit Andhra Pradesh, Odisha; Farmers Advised to Protect Paddy & Other Produces

Indian Meteorological Department, IMD is anticipating unusual activity in the Bay of Bengal. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the south Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal around November 30 which could become a cyclonic system in the first week of December. 

Update on Cyclone in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh & Odisha are likely to receive heavy rains starting from December 3.  The rains will be more in the North Coastal Andhra and south Odisha from December 3 to December 5 but south Andhra might be spared. 

Cyclone Jawad: 

If the Cyclonic system is formed in Bay of Bengal, the storm is expected to affect Andhra Pradesh & Odisha and will be named-  “Cyclone  Jawad”. 

The sea conditions will remain rough to very rough. There will be high waves in the sea and at the same time, the speed of the winds will also be of very high intensity. The speed may range between 60 – 70 km per hour and in some places, winds are even likely to blow at a speed of 80 – 90 km/hr. 

Indian Meteorological Department, IMD has also predicted a low-pressure area to form over the Arabian  Sea around November 30 and is likely to become more marked and move west-northward in the subsequent 48 hours. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is expected in Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 30th November- 2nd December and isolated very heavy rainfall on 1st December. 

IMD’s Advise to Farmers & Fishermen: 

Mohapatra has appealed to the farmers to protect their harvested paddy & other produces to prevent losses. Apart from that Fishermen have also been warned against venturing into the sea of west-central Bay of Bengal from December 2 as the sea condition is likely to be rough during the period.
