In a concerted effort to prioritize the promotion of a sustainable and climate-resilient blue economy, the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) under the India G20 Presidency has announced its 3rd meeting, set to commence on May 21st.

The meeting will commence with a G20 Mega Beach Clean Up event organized in Mumbai, aimed at raising awareness and encouraging community participation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The G20 Mega Beach Clean Up event will take place on May 21st from 7 AM to 9 AM at Juhu Beach in Mumbai. G20 delegates participating in the 3rd ECSWG meeting will join forces with Indian Coastal States/UTs and other G20 countries to actively engage in the campaign. The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and the Ministry of Earth Sciences will collaborate on this initiative, showcasing the government's commitment to combatting climate change through multi-sectoral cooperation.

The beach cleaning campaign is not limited to Mumbai alone but will encompass more than 30 beaches across nine Coastal States and four Union Territories in India. Additionally, Indian Embassies/Consulates in over 20 countries, including G20 and invited nations, will also organize beach cleaning campaigns in their respective locations, showcasing the global significance of this initiative under the Indian G20 presidency.

In addition to the beach clean-up activities, local administrations have planned various awareness programs and sensitization initiatives targeting the local communities. These activities include an inter-school painting competition, the promotion of waste recycling, and encouraging pledges for the conservation of the marine ecosystem. Renowned Padma Awardee Sudarshan Patnaik will also contribute to the campaign by creating a Sand-Art display at Juhu Beach, Mumbai.

Furthermore, an all-India inter-school painting competition involving over 5900 students has been organized to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of marine waste on the environment, inspiring people to take action to prevent further damage.

The beach cleaning campaign is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with the environment, as reflected in the LiFE Mission (Lifestyle for Environment). This visionary call emphasizes individual responsibility and behavioral change as crucial components in addressing environmental issues.

The campaign aims to promote LiFE by encouraging widespread community participation, or JANBAGIDARI, with the ultimate objective of establishing a sustainable and environmentally conscious way of living.

The significance of community involvement cannot be overstated, as more than 10,000 volunteers from various stakeholder groups, including local communities, governments, private organizations/corporations, and conservation-focused NGOs, are expected to participate in this campaign.

This large-scale 'Jan Bhagidari' initiative stands as a testament to India's commitment to preserving coastal and marine ecosystems during its G20 Presidency. India also seeks to enhance collaboration among G20 nations in promoting sustainable ocean management and marine biodiversity conservation.

Following the Mega Beach Clean Up campaign, the ECSWG meeting will facilitate discussions on the Ocean20 dialogue, a platform for sharing best practices in science, technology, innovation, policy, governance, and blue finance mechanisms. These discussions aim to ensure a sustainable and climate-resilient blue economy, solidifying India's dedication to addressing environmental issues and fostering a sustainable future.
