Starting June 3, 2024, Amul milk prices across all variants have increased by ₹2 per litre, as announced by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). This decision comes in response to the rising costs of operation and production.
Jayen Mehta, the Managing Director of GCMMF, which markets milk and dairy products under the Amul brand, emphasized that the hike is necessary to compensate farmers for their increased production costs.
With the new price adjustment, the revised rates for 500 ml packs of Amul's buffalo milk, Gold milk, and Shakti milk are now ₹36, ₹33, and ₹30, respectively.
The ₹2 per litre hike translates to a 3-4% increase in the maximum retail price (MRP), which remains below the average food inflation rate. This is the first price increase for fresh pouch milk in major markets since February 2023.
GCMMF's statement highlighted that the price hike aims to sustain remunerative prices for milk producers and encourage higher milk production. The cooperative emphasized its policy of passing on approximately 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers to the milk producers. “The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and encourage them for a higher milk production,” the statement read.
The price increase varies across different milk variants. Amul Gold and Amul Taaza will see a ₹2 increase per litre, while Amul Buffalo Milk will rise by ₹3 per litre, and other variants will increase by ₹1 per litre.
The latest price hike by Amul is a strategic move to balance the increased costs of milk production and ensure fair compensation for farmers.
