Acne is a skin condition that causes whiteheads, pimples, and blackheads. This skin condition is common among teenagers but it can affect people of all ages. Acne usually appears on the shoulders, chest, upper back, face, and forehead. Symptoms of acne usually include pimples, papules (small red tender bumps), blackheads, whiteheads, large painful lumps under the skin, and painful pus-filled lumps under the skin.

Acne is usually caused by bacterial infection, excess sebum or oil production, inflammation, and the clogging of hair follicles by oil and dead skin cells. Acne can be triggered by some factors as well. For instance, hormonal changes during puberty can lead to acne, hormonal changes during midlife in women can also lead to acne, and a diet that is rich in carbohydrates may worsen acne.

Usually, people attribute a diet that is rich in chocolate and processed food to acne, however, studies show that it doesn’t have a major effect on acne. Applying cosmetics to the skin also doesn’t worsen acne as long as the makeup used is non-oily and is removed properly. Prolonged and untreated acne can cause pitted skin or thick scars. It can also cause hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation.

If you have acne, then you can apply the following face masks to reduce it. However, if your acne still persists then you may want to seek medical treatment.

Honey and Lemon Juice Face Mask- Sometimes acne is caused by bacteria. The honey and lemon juice face mask exhibits anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, it can prevent acne. Lemon juice can also clear the skin of excess oil. Use this face mask 2 to 3 times a day. Spread the mixture all over your face and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. It is important that you clean your skin properly and apply moisturizer straight away.

Neem and turmeric face mask- Neem and turmeric are two of the most popular ingredients in modern skin care products. This is because both of these ingredients are extremely beneficial for our skin. Both neem and acne treat acne, reduce scars, and lighten hyperpigmentation. They also promote collagen production, moisturise and hydrate the skin, heal wounds, treat dry skin, and reduce wrinkles. You can make a neem and turmeric face mask by grinding a handful of fresh neem leaves and mixing it with water and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Apply for 15 to 20 minutes.

Aloe vera mask- Mix some aloe vera gel with either turmeric powder or green tea and apply it on the face for 15 to 20 minutes once a week. Aloe vera gel reduces the inflammation and irritation caused by acne whereas both turmeric and green tea help control oil and strengthen the skin’s barrier. The salicylic acid present in aloe vera also acts as an exfoliant that cleans pores clogged by oil. Studies show that drinking aloe juice can also improve mild acne.

Multani Mitti and Rose Water Face Mask- Multani Mitti or Fuller’s Earth removes excess dirt and oil from the face and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, rose water has a calming and cooling effect on the skin.

Oatmeal face mask- Oatmeal is not just a healthy, nutritious, and quick breakfast option but it also has several benefits for the skin. Oatmeal is a good source of B complex vitamins and vitamin E which play an important role in keeping our skin healthy. Plus, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. You can also mix some turmeric in the oatmeal for better results. It is important that before you apply this mask, you cleanse your face thoroughly.
