COVID-19 is known to cause devastating damage to the lungs, leading to lung complications such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) - a form of lung failure and can be fatal. Patients with ARDS are unable to breathe on their own, need ventilator support to circulate oxygen in the body. People with pre-existing lung problems such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are likely to develop symptoms. It is very important to take precautions to keep your lungs healthy and reduce risk of infection.

Those who perform deep breathing exercises for about 2 to 5 minutes every day had a significant increase in the vital capacity, says the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.

Eat well: Eating plays a crucial role in one’s healthy life balance. A well-balanced diet will help one to stay healthy and fit, which can also prevent infections. Good nutrition balance will also control your symptoms. One should eat a well-balanced diet, which consists of five key food groups to keep your lungs healthy. Include these food groups are fruits and vegetables, starchy carbohydrates, protein, dairy foods, and oils in your diet.

Don’t smoke: Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer. It is also linked to most lung conditions, including asthma and COPD. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), evidence shows that smoking directly affects and increases the severity of illness and death in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
