What is Delta Plus Variant?

The variety, known in India as "Delta Plus," was originally detected on June 11 in a Public Health England bulletin.

It is a sub-lineage of the Delta variant discovered in India, and it has acquired the K417N spike protein mutation, which is also observed in the Beta variant discovered in South Africa.

How can you defend yourself against the Delta Plus variant?

The second wave of corona-virus wreaked havoc on people's physical and mental well-being. While the country returns to normal and COVID cases decline, a new strain is threatening us. This variety is a descendant of the Delta variant, which first appeared in India in October last year and sparked the country's second wave.

At least seven cases of the novel COVID Delta Plus type have been detected in Madhya Pradesh, with two patients dying. Furthermore, this deadly variance has impacted the states of Maharashtra and Kerala.

What is the significance of the COVID Delta Plus variant?

The government recently declared the Delta Plus coronavirus variety to be a 'variant of concern' (VoC). According to officials, the new COVID variation has three distinguishing characteristics that make it more dangerous and alarming than earlier COVID versions.

  1. Transmissibility has improved
  2. Increased binding to lung cell receptors
  3. A possible decrease in monoclonal antibody response

India is currently one of nine countries where the Delta Plus variation has been discovered. The mutation has been found in the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Nepal, China, and Russia, according to reports.

What measures can we take to protect ourselves?

The safety of people remains in their own hands when the country unlocks and various states lift their border controls. The only method to stop the virus from spreading, especially the new developing versions, is to be mindful and follow COVID guidelines. As a result, here are some measures you may take to safeguard yourself and your loved ones.

Crucial Measures to be followed

Maintaining social distance is critical since the Delta Plus variant is more transmissible and spreads faster than the preceding variants. When necessary, wear a second mask, especially if you're outside or in a crowded area. Apart from that, wash or sterilize your hands on a frequent basis.

Only leave the house or go out if absolutely required

Stay at home and avoid going outside. In an emergency, wear a mask and stay away from contaminated surfaces. Keep your kids indoors as well, and introduce them to engaging activities that will keep them from being distracted by the outside world.

Vaccination should be given first priority at all times

Vaccination is the only option to obtain any immunity against the virus, despite the fact that some individuals are still skeptical. Certain COVID vaccinations have been shown to be effective against the new variants, particularly the Delta variant, according to studies, making it even more crucial to obtain your vaccine injection.

Centre’s prevention initiatives

The Delta Plus variation has been found in roughly 22 COVID cases in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh, according to reports.

"The Chief Secretaries of the states have been advised to take immediate containment measures in these districts and clusters, as identified by INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia), including preventing crowds and intermingling of people, widespread testing, prompt tracing, and vaccine coverage on a priority basis," the Union Ministry warned the three states.
