Coffee is a widely consumed beverage globally and is renowned for its ability to provide an energy boost, combating morning fatigue and afternoon lethargy.

It has earned recognition as a potential health elixir, but at the same time it found itself listed as a potential carcinogen by the World Health Organization in 1991.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans stipulate that an 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee contains approximately 95 mg of caffeine. A moderate coffee intake typically falls within the range of 3-5 cups per day, equivalent to an average caffeine consumption of 400 mg.

Numerous studies suggest that coffee may lower the risk of conditions like prostate cancer and heart failure, among other benefits. However, some individuals may encounter severe adverse effects from coffee consumption.

Delve into the following sections to learn about individuals who should avoid coffee consumption:

People Who Should Avoid Coffee

1. People with Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder, or OAB, results in an abrupt and recurrent urge to urinate, often challenging to manage. This condition can prompt a frequent need to urinate throughout both daytime and nighttime, accompanied by the possibility of involuntary urine leakage. In the context of OAB, the consumption of caffeine can intensify urinary frequency, contributing to a heightened frequency of restroom visits.

2. Pregnant Women

Numerous research findings propose that elevated caffeine intake during pregnancy might elevate the likelihood of miscarriage, diminished birth weight, and additional complexities in pregnancy. Caffeine is thought to induce constriction in the blood vessels within the uterus and placenta, potentially resulting in reduced blood flow to the developing fetus and impeding its growth.

3. People With IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized by abdominal discomfort, often accompanied by alternating episodes of diarrhoea, constipation, or a combination of both. Additional manifestations include sensations of bloating, cramping, burning, and abdominal distention. It is also underscored that caffeine has the potential to worsen diarrhoea, a significant symptom associated with IBS.

4. People with Sleep Disorder

Caffeine, classified as a drug, functions to enhance vitality and heighten vigilance. Its mechanism involves acting as an "adenosine receptor antagonist." Adenosine, a naturally occurring compound in the body, induces drowsiness. Caffeine obstructs the adenosine receptor, preventing the onset of sleepiness.

5. People with Glaucoma

Glaucoma, a cluster of eye conditions that detrimentally affect the optic nerve responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain, worsens progressively over time. An international multi-center study has indicated that the consumption of significant daily amounts of caffeine may amplify the risk of glaucoma.
