Usually, stale food is not good for consumption anymore, especially food that is not stored properly in a refrigerator. If something has been sitting at room temperature for more than 12 hours, then there is a good chance that it is stale and shouldn’t be consumed as it can lead to food poisoning.

Food becomes stale when it has either been stored for too long or is exposed to open air which is full of bacteria. You can tell that a food item has gone bad when it develops a slimy texture, becomes discolored, omits a sour smell, or tastes bad. Eating stale food can cause diarrhea, acid reflux, heartburn, bloating, gas, and in severe cases lead to bacterial contamination.

However, recent studies show that eating stale rotis that are stored properly and consumed within 12 hours after making has several health benefits. Let’s check them out.

  1. A rich source of vital nutrients and vitamins- Stale chapatis made from wheat flour and water have a low glycemic index. This is because as the roti becomes stale, the complex sugar present in it starts to break down. Therefore, when we consume stale rotis, it doesn’t spike our blood pressure or sugar levels. Stale rotis’ ability to control blood pressure makes it a great snack for diabetic people.
