Beetroot and Its Delicious Fusion in Dosa

Beetroot, also known as beet or chukandar, is a vibrant red root vegetable packed with nutrients and flavor. Rich in fiber, folate (Vitamin B9), Vitamin C, potassium, iron, magnesium, and powerful antioxidants called betalains, beetroot is often considered a superfood. These nutrients make it highly beneficial for overall health. It helps regulate blood pressure, supports healthy cell growth, boosts immunity, improves digestion, and even enhances stamina and energy levels.

Beetroot can be enjoyed in various forms such as fresh juices, salads, soups, pickles, chips, and curries. One particularly creative and healthy way to consume beetroot is in the form of a Beetroot Dosa- a fusion dish that brings together the traditional charm of dosa with the vibrant punch of beetroot.

Beetroot Dosa: Ingredients

  • 1 cup dosa batter

  • ½ medium-sized beetroot

  • ¼ cup chopped onions

  • ¼ cup chopped tomatoes

  • 1–2 green chilies (as per taste)

  • ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder

  • ¼ cup curd

  • Ghee or oil for cooking

Beetroot Dosa: Preparation Method

  • Start by thoroughly washing and peeling the beetroot, then grate it finely. Chop the onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander leaves into small pieces and set them aside.

  • In a blender, combine the grated beetroot with a portion of the dosa batter and curd. Blend into a smooth, even mixture.

  • Transfer the blended mixture into a bowl. Season it with salt, pepper, and red chili powder. For a lighter texture, you may add a pinch of baking soda. Let the batter rest while you heat a non-stick pan or tawa, lightly greased with oil or ghee.

  • Once the pan is hot, pour a ladleful of the batter onto the center and gently spread it in a circular motion to form a dosa. Drizzle some ghee or oil around the edges.

  • Before the dosa fully cooks, sprinkle the chopped onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander evenly over the surface. Cook on medium flame until the edges crisp up and the base turns golden brown.

  • Serve hot with your favorite chutney or sambar.

Beetroot Dosa is a colorful, tasty, and nutrient-rich dish that makes healthy eating both exciting and satisfying. Infused with natural sweetness and a beautiful hue from beetroot, this dosa adds not only visual appeal but also a powerful nutritional punch. It’s quick to prepare, suitable for any meal of the day, and a wonderful way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet. Pair it with chutney or sambar, and enjoy a dish that nourishes your body and delights your taste buds.
