Avocado, often called Butter Fruit or Makhan Phal due to its creamy and buttery texture, is actually a type of berry. Known for its mild flavor and smooth consistency, this fruit is not only versatile but is also highly nutritional fruit. It is rich in dietary fiber that supports digestion and helps regulate blood sugar level, while vitamin B and C contribute to energy production, healthy cell function and stronger immunity.

Due to its nutritional value and delicious taste, avocado has become a popular ingredient in modern cuisine and is often considered a healthy addition to a balanced diet.

Avocado is versatile and can be used in countless culinary dishes, yet most people still limit it to toast, smoothies or salads. But there is much more you can do with this fruit, like trying this unique and flavorful Avocado Sabzi.

To make this delicious avocado sabzi at home you need to have these ingredients:

  • 2 avocados

  • An onion

  • A small tomato

  •  Green chilli

  • A pinch mustard seed

  •  A pinch of cumin

  • Turmeric powder

  • Red Chilli powder

  • Coriander powder

  • Salt

  • Oil for cooking

  •  Coriander for garnish

  •  And a  lemon.

Procedure of Making Avocado Sabzi

  • Step1: Cut the avocado into two vertical halfs. Avocado fruit has a large size, a single seed in the middle scoop it out and peel the outer layer of it. Then cut it into neat little cubes.

  • Step2: Take a pan and heat a spoon of oil in it. Add a pinch of mustard seeds, once they start to pop add a pinch of cumin. Let them sizzle until they release their aroma.

  • Step3: Toss finely chopped onions and sliced green chilies. Saute them until the onion edges become golden brown.

  • Step4: Add chopped tomatoes until it softens and forms a good base for the sabzi.

  • Step5: Add the spices like turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt. Stir the masala until the oil separates a little.

  • Step6: Gently add the chopped avocado into the prepared masala. Let them heat for just 2-3 minutes and turn them gently so that they can take up the malasa without being mushy or overcooked.

  • Step7: Switch off the heat. Garnish the sabzi with coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon. Serve it warm. 

This sabzi goes well when paired with roti or paratha, you can also have it as a side dish alongside rice and curry.

This dish is the perfect example of how western native American fruit Avocado blends beautifully with the Indian spices and taste. Cooking avocado like a sabzi with tomatoes, onions and traditional spices gives it a whole new personality. This fusion not only makes avocado more approachable and acceptable in the Indian household but also expands a lot more options to use avocado as an ingredient.
