Round Table Interactive Meet on Millets: Powerhouse of Nutrition

As we are aware, Millets are grown in about 12.45 million hectares with an annual production of 15.53 million tonnes and contribute 10% to the country’s food grain basket. Millets are nutritious, climate-resilient, hardy and dry land crops hence tagged as Nutri-cereals, contributing substantially to food and nutritional security. Recently Millets have gained popularity due to its nongluten tendency.

India is the world's leader in the production of millets with a share of around 40% of the world’s total production. India produces around 16 million MT of Millets annually. India is the 2nd largest exporter of Millets. Millets exports from India have continuously increased at 12% CAGR in the last 3 years. The millets market is set to grow from its current market value of more than $9 billion to over $12 billion by 2025.

Nutritious food is a human’s fundamental need. Nutritional insecurity is a major threat to the world’s population that is highly dependent on a cereals-based diet, and deficient in micronutrients. Upscaling of millets production and establishment of supply chains through organized processing centres /hubs near growing regions has not happened. The Sector has been facing numerous challenges pertaining to production, processing, value addition, marketing and consumption which have hindered the process of advocating millets as the staple foods throughout the world. Revitalizing millets into mainstream dryland agriculture and diversifying the food basket is important for sustaining the food, nutritional security of consumers and livelihood security of the rural households. To achieve this, the major challenges are to deliver millet-based technologies which are sustainable and market-oriented.

Against this backdrop, PHD Chamber is organizing a Round Table interactive Meet on Millets: Powerhouse of Nutrition on 26th September 2022 at 11.00 a.m. at PHD House, New Delhi. This conference will provide the platform for food industry leaders; practitioners; scientists; farmers; organized agriculture; civil society; government policymakers, the private sector; and NGO’s to discuss and share their experiences on successes, and to deliberate the challenges to nutrition through food with special focus on innovation, marketability & palatability.
