Madhya Pradesh has been the major pulse producing state in the country but the manufacturing has come down to 81.11 Lakh tones in 2017-18 to 43.64 Lakh tones in 2020-21. Pulses production has virtually halved in Madhya Pradesh over the previous couple of years, as per reports.
Pulses production In India: Present scenario
Madhya Pradesh ranks first both in terms of area (19.8%) under pulses cultivation in India. However, it lacks in Average yield. States like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Gujarat have reported increase in production of pulses during 2016-17 and 2020-21.
In Maharashtra, the manufacturing of pulses elevated from 37.68 Lakh tones in 2016-17 to 42.42 Lakh tones in 2020-21. In Rajasthan it increased from 31.81 Lakh tones to 48.21 Lakh tones.
While replying to a question in Lok Sabha on 29th July,2021, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, mentioned the manufacturing of pulses has been rising over the last 3 years. The manufacturing went up from 220.75Lkh tones in 2018-19 to 255.75 Lakh tones in 2020-21.
Initiatives for Enhancing Pulses Production in India
To extend the manufacturing of pulses the Nationwide Meals Safety Mission (NFSM) 5-Pulses programme is being applied in 644 districts of 28 states and Union Territories (UTs) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Beneath NFSM (pulses) programme, the Authorities supplies assist for breeder seed manufacturing of pulses, and 150 seed hubs have been created at ICAR institutes , state agriculture Universities and KVKs for rising licensed seeds manufacturing of pulses.
A brand new scheme ‘Intercropping of pulses with sugarcane’ was applied in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand throughout 2018-19 and 2019-20.
