Goa has registered a 22 % increase in milk production in the current fiscal as compared to the previous year (2017-18), informed a state Animal Husbandry department official on 1st March 2019.
According to the department’s data, daily milk production till December 2018 stood at 81,655 litres, which is up from 72,000 litres / day in 2017-18 and 66,000 litres / day in 2016-17.
The data, which was collected by the department of cooperative dairy societies in Goa, clearly showed that milk production in the state had doubled in the last 8 years.
Another official said that milk production on daily basis in 2011-12 was 40,000 litres.
Despite the creditable increase in milk output, the official pointed out that it was not good enough to match the daily requirement of the state which stood at 3.5 lakh litres.
He further told that the Goa government’s ‘Kamdhenu’ scheme was one of the reasons for the rise in production. In this scheme, farmers are offered financial incentives to buy milch cattle.
More than 3,600 farmers have been benefited from the scheme so far and the government had spent a sum of Rs. 54 crore on it since 2012, the official told.
He also said that till December 2018, farmers had bought 1,533 animals in 38 cattle fairs conducted by the government.
