Food is a basic necessity for survival, yet millions worldwide suffer from hunger and malnutrition. To address this, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) established World Food Day, observed every year on October 16. The 2025 theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and Better Future,” emphasizes global unity to combat food insecurity. Currently, 673 million people face hunger, with India ranking 105 out of 125 countries on the 2024 Global Hunger Index, highlighting the urgent need for collective action.

Historical Background of World Food Day

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was founded on 16th October 1945. It was created with the mission to improve nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, raise the standard of living in rural communities, and contribute to global economic growth.

Later in 1979, during the 20th General Conference of the FAO in Rome, the idea of celebrating World Food Day was put forward. The proposal was unanimously accepted, and the first World Food Day was celebrated on 16 October 1981 to mark the anniversary of FAO’s founding.

Since then, it has been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising awareness about hunger, food security, and agricultural development. Over time, World Food Day has grown into a global platform for governments, NGOs, farmers, businesses, and individuals to come together and work toward a hunger-free future.

World Food Day 2025 Theme

Each year, FAO announces a specific theme focusing on urgent global food issues, such as climate change, sustainable agriculture, or malnutrition. This year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and Better Future,” underlines the need to work together as a team to overcome this issue. We must produce more with less for a future that is more inclusive and more equitable.

Why Working Towards Food Insecurity is Important

Food insecurity is not just about the absence of food, but about the lack of safe, nutritious, and affordable food that is essential for a healthy life. Hunger and malnutrition weaken communities, reduce productivity, affect children’s growth, and even delay national development. When people do not get enough food, they become more vulnerable to diseases and poverty, creating a cycle that is difficult to break. Addressing food insecurity is therefore important to reduce inequality and build stronger and healthier societies.

Ways to Overcome Food Insecurity

Overcoming food insecurity requires collective global, national, and local action.

  • Promoting Sustainable Agriculture: Investing in sustainable agriculture can help farmers increase productivity while protecting the environment.

  • Food Distribution System: Governments and organizations must ensure a better food distribution system to reduce waste and make food accessible to vulnerable populations.

  • Supporting Small-Scale Farmers: Providing modern technology, irrigation facilities, storage solutions, and fair market prices is crucial.

  • Individual Actions: Reducing food wastage, supporting local farmers, and adopting mindful consumption can contribute significantly.

Greater and more targeted investment, new ideas, and deeper cooperation are needed. From governments and international organizations to farmers, researchers, businesses, and consumers, including youth, everyone has a role to play. Together, these steps can pave the way toward a hunger-free and food-secure future.

World Food Day reminds us that hunger is not just a global statistic but a daily reality for millions. Solving this crisis requires working hand in hand across nations, communities, and individuals. By promoting sustainable agriculture, ensuring fair food distribution, and encouraging responsible consumption, we can build a future where no one goes hungry. The 2025 theme challenges us to act with unity and urgency so that food security becomes not just a goal, but a reality for all.
