What Are Some Lesser Known Facts About This Fruit?

Coconut has many uses, from its oil to its shell, leaves and so on.

Coconut Husk

1. The husk of a fresh coconut is made of strong fibres. The material between the fibres has a high lignin content which acts as a natural glue. Fibre boards can be made out of them by following these steps:

• Shred the coconut husk and press it into a mould.

• Heat it to a few hundred degrees. It will turn into a solid board similar to a medium-density fibre board.

There is no need to add any additional glue or filler. It can be made from 100% coconut husk. This can be used for construction just like regular fibre boards. Coconut boards are even being considered for use in car floorboards.

2. Ground coconut husk known as coir, can be used as a natural soil amendment or mulch in gardening, improving soil structure and water retention. It is also a hydroponic planting medium. This is especially popular with growing orchids and mushrooms.

Coconut Oil

1. Natural Deodorant: Coconut oil's antibacterial properties make it an effective natural deodorant, helping to neutralize odors.

2. Indoor plants: Rub a few dabs of oil into their leaves and stems for added health. It will keep their roots extra moist and absorbent leaving their leaves glistening with a healthy, dust-free finish. Coconut oil also acts as a natural herbicide. Due to the abundance of fatty acids in coconut oil, it can act as a natural weed killer.

3. Wood Polish: Coconut oil is used to polish and condition wooden furniture. It brings out the natural shine and helps to preserve the wood.

4. Soothes eczema and psoriasis: Coconut oil can also be used as a natural treatment for those with eczema, a cluster of skin issues that lead to red, itchy, swollen patches of skin, and psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to build up, which leads to rough, red, scaly patches.

Coconut Shell

1. Charcoal: Coconut shells are used to produce charcoal, which is used as food, and this coconut charcoal is much stronger than other charcoals. It is commonly used for the manufacture of active carbon. Active carbon is used to eliminate impurities. Coconut shell charcoals are used in the purification industry.

2. Exfoliation: Due to its slightly abrasive texture, coconut shell powder can act as a gentle exfoliant for the scalp, helping to remove dead skin cells and improve scalp health.

3. Coconut shell products: Products such as coconut shell crafts, furniture, etc. are durable and biodegradable.

World Coconut Day is a perfect moment to reflect on its incredible versatility and benefits. From nourishing our bodies to enhancing our homes and lives in unexpected ways, coconuts offer a plethora of uses that go far beyond the kitchen.
