Every year on April 11, people all throughout the country mark National Safe Motherhood Day to promote lactating mothers' proper medical care.
Mothers hold a prominent position and are seen as even more important than God since they care for their children even before they enter this world of living things. She puts up with suffering while doing all the necessary steps to provide for, nourish, and protect her children.
In order to honour the sacrifice and love of a mother, people all around the world celebrate International Mother's Day or Mother's Day. Similarly, on April 11 each year, people mark National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) to raise awareness about maternity care for pregnant and nursing women.
History and Significance of National Safe Motherhood Day
The White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), which educates the government on the value of good health for mothers, particularly during pregnancy, is responsible for creating the annual National Safe Motherhood Day celebration.
The primary goal of the WRAI was to educate women on the value of healthy lifestyle choices as well as the availability and accessibility of various healthcare programmes for women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and post-natal care. In light of this, the Indian national government also designated April 11—Kasturba Gandhi's birthday—as National Safe Motherhood Day in 2003. Since then, people all across the country have celebrated this historic day by holding various awareness campaigns across the country.
Kasturba Gandhi was a committed mother and a social reformer. She was the wife of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, often known as the Father of the Country. She used to spend much of her time volunteering and providing assistance in ashrams. Because of this, she was also called "Ba" which means mother. Gandhi worked on the advancement of women in Champaran, Bihar, in 1971 in addition to serving in ashrams. He taught them hygiene, health, discipline, reading, and writing.
How to observe the day?
Every year, WRAI conducts a number of programmes focused on a certain theme. On this important day, the organization launches initiatives across the country to increase public awareness of maternity care and prenatal care for expectant and breastfeeding moms.
These campaigns emphasize the right to life of women and work to prevent preventable deaths from complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
Every woman has the right to receive proper care both during pregnancy and after giving birth, as well as high-quality nutrition. While the government is working to reduce maternal mortality, it is also our duty to make sure that women have access to healthcare and the right education.
