Immigration level plan
The country released the 2021-2023 ‘Immigration Level Plan’ on October 30th. The plan, which sets the total immigration and the numbers and targets for each category, will be presented in Parliament every year. The new plan is to welcome immigrants to atleast 1% of Canada's population, including 4.01 million permanent residents by 2021.
According to the latest figures, Canada welcomes 4.01 million migrants in 2021, 4.11 million in 2022 and 4.21 million in 2023. In the previous plan, the number of migrants targeted by the country was 3.51 lakh in 2021 and 3.61 lakh in 2022. This is the most ambitious immigration target in Canadian history.
In the past, 1913 was the only time Canada welcomed more than 4 million immigrants in a year. During that time, 4.01 million people immigrated to Canada. According to the IRCC, one in four people in Canada who received PR status last year, was Indian. Of the 3.41 lakh people who arrived in the country in 2019, 10,000 to 85,585 people (ie. 25.1%) were from India.
What is PR (Permanent Residency?
PR is similar to the US green card. A PR holder got the right to live, work or study anywhere in Canada along with his family. Infact, PR is halfway to get future Canadian citizenship.
