The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) said that the total marine fish production in India has increased from 3.48 million tonnes to 3.56 million tonnes a marginal increase of 2.2% from the previous year.
According to the reports, Tamil Nadu topped the production chart in the country with a production of 7.75 lakh tonnes a 10% increase from last year when the state produced 7.01 laid tonnes. The second spot went to Gujarat which saw a major hit in its marine production which dropped down from 7.80 lakh tonnes to 7.49 lakh tonnes a decline of 4.13 % while the third spot went to Kerala which produced 5.44 lakh tonnes a massive decline of 15 % from the previous year where it had produced almost 6.42 lakh tonnes.
Gujarat was the largest producer last year followed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The estimates say that India saw six major cyclones during the past year such as Fani in April, Vayu in June, Hika in September, Kyarr in October, Maha in October-November, and Bulbul in October-November was the reason that fishing production saw only a marginal increase.
The total value of fish production was adjudged to be at Rs. 60,881 crore which is a 15.6% increase from 2018 while at the retail level the vale was Rs.92,356 crore which is also an increase of 15% from the previous year.
