Gir Cow: This Indigenous Breed Gives 50 Liters of Milk per Day

When it comes to a good breed in a desi cow, then the name of Gir cow is definitely taken. It is the first choice of livestock farmers for low-cost abundant production in semi-arid climates. Ghee, milk, cow urine and dung of this cow are also sold at a good price. It is clear from this that rearing of Gir cow is a profitable deal from all sides.

When it comes to good cattle breeds then Gir cow is always on the top. It is the primary choice of livestock farmers in India. Today we will discuss how our cattle owners can raise Gir cow and get the most benefits. 

To enhance dairy production, the right choice or selection of cattle breed is very significant, and when it comes to the best desi cow breed then people prefer Gir cow. It is becoming the first choice of livestock farmers . 

The cow's ghee, milk, urine, and dung are also sold at a good rate. It is evident from this that raising Gir cows is a win-win scenario for the farmers.  

The story behind the name Gir

This breed originally comes from the Gir forest in Gujarat. It is also known by various names in different parts of the world. Its primary focus is in the Saurashtra, Gujarat districts of Rajkot, Junagadh, Somnath, Bhavnagar, and Amreli.

Its popularity has expanded to Brazil through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This is why its population is constantly expanding. 

Classification/Identification of Gir Cow 

Gir cows are classified into two breeds. Swarna Kapila and Devmani are both advanced breeds. They are predominantly red in color. It has a large forehead and long ears. Its horns are long and curved with a huge hump. 

Milk production

Gir cow may produce up to 50 litres of milk each day. This is why its popularity is growing in the animal husbandry sector. Many schemes are also being implemented in order to protect and grow their numbers. They were once solely found in Gujarat, but are now common in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. 

A cow of this breed has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Gir cows can have 6 to 12 babies in their lifetime. Its weight can range between 400 to 475 kg. However, this is only achievable if the animals are fed well. For better milk production from Gir cattle, a well-balanced nutritional diet should be provided.
