This breed originally comes from the Gir forest in Gujarat. It is also known by various names in different parts of the world. Its primary focus is in the Saurashtra, Gujarat districts of Rajkot, Junagadh, Somnath, Bhavnagar, and Amreli.
Its popularity has expanded to Brazil through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This is why its population is constantly expanding.
Classification/Identification of Gir Cow
Gir cows are classified into two breeds. Swarna Kapila and Devmani are both advanced breeds. They are predominantly red in color. It has a large forehead and long ears. Its horns are long and curved with a huge hump.
Milk production
Gir cow may produce up to 50 litres of milk each day. This is why its popularity is growing in the animal husbandry sector. A cow of this breed has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Gir cows can have 6 to 12 babies in their lifetime. Its weight can range between 400 to 475 kg.
