GADVASU (Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) held a review meeting with fish and shrimp producers from around in Punjab on Sunday to solicit their participation in developing an action plan for the fisheries sector's horizontal and vertical growth.
Vice-chancellor Dr Inderjeet Singh emphasized the importance of technology backup and farmer linkages with research and development (R and D) institutes, as well as the scope of fisheries development in the state, with particular reference to doubling farmers' income, promotional schemes, youth entrepreneurship development, and the use of degraded lands.
The farmers discussed issues such as capacity building, seed quality, feed manufacturing, subsidy release, electricity connections/tariffs, solar systems, water/seed testing, bio-security, processing, and marketing, with a particular emphasis on the need to enforce regulations for the development of shrimp farming in inland saline areas under an act. Dr Meera D Ansal, dean of the College of Fisheries, and specialists from the college answered the farmers' concerns.
The experts informed the farmers about the university's various capacity building and utility services offered to fish/shrimp farmers through the directorate of extension education and College of Fisheries in Ludhiana, as well as its Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in Mohali, Barnala, and Tarntaran, in the concluding session.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Singh advised farmers to create farmer producer organisations (FPOs) to take benefit of various promotional schemes given by the department of fisheries, ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying (PMMSY).
