Parasites are a major cause of diseases in animals leading to the production losses in livestock sector that frequently results in the significant economic loss & impact on the animal welfare. Keeping this issue in view, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, (GADVASU) Ludhiana, is going to organize the ‘Animal Parasite Awareness Week’ from 23rd -27th August, 2021.
Dr. L. D. Singla, Head, Department of Veterinary Parasitological revealed that the control measures employed to combat the parasitic diseases are costly, often time-consuming and more importantly they may result in development of resistance to the drugs used to control them. He informed that many of the farmers are not even aware of the impact of parasitic diseases on dairy sector and the hot-spots of the year during which the infections/infestations flare up and causes damage. All these circumstances frequently lead to the huge economic losses in terms of mortality, lower production and even the reproductive failures.
Program Highlights
He informed that during this awareness week, specific articles, news stories on management and control of parasitic infections will be published in the newspapers. Special Radio/ TV Talks by the university experts will also be aired during this week for creating the awareness regarding importance of parasitic diseases in livestock rearing. A workshop will also be organized at the campus as well as at the outstations for farmers, scientists, veterinary officers, extension specialists and students.
Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that this programme will certainly create the awareness among the livestock farmers, veterinarians and extension personnel’s regarding the negative impact of parasitic infections on livestock sector and measures to mitigate them by using holistic integrated approach. This will further help in getting the maximum profitability from livestock with minimal use of chemicals.
