Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) , Ludhiana organized a webinar on “ Best Management Practices for Fish Farming” for the fish farmers of the state. Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director of Extension Education informed that fish farming is an upcoming entrepreneurial activity in the state.
Scientists at the College of Fisheries, GADAVSU have been working in close association with farmers across the state to promote fish farming. The webinar was a part of the efforts by the university to provide up to date information to farmers. Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Scientist, College of Fisheries was the speaker at the webinar. She shared important tips for the management of fish pond with the farmers. She stressed that farmers must have a sound knowledge of the management practices to be successful in this enterprise.
Good management practices can help the farmers to earn more profit by cutting their costs. The farmers should also focus on minimizing losses due to disease incidence and mortality. She talked about the importance of water quality and timely cleaning of the pond to boost production. She also explained the significance of feeding for the good health of fish. The webinar concluded with a discussion on winter management of fish pond.
Dr. Vaneet elaborated on the methods to protect the fish from temperature variation . Periodic aeration of the pond is mandatory during the winter season she said. The webinar was coordinated by Dr. Jaswinder Singh and Dr. Arunbeer Singh. The coordinators informed that the University is organizing webinars every week to share scientific information on various aspects of livestock farming with the farmers.
