College of Fisheries (CoF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), has started 10-days e-training on “Recent advances in Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Management for Sustainable Aquaculture”, under ICAR-NFDB-"National Surveillance Program for Aquatic Animal Diseases" (NSPAAD), of Department of Fisheries (DoF), Ministry of Fisheries Animal Husbandry & Dairying, GOI.
Welcoming the dignitaries in the inaugural session, Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, CoF informed that out of total 605 registrations received for the said training program, 90 candidates have been selected on the basis of their experience/work in the related field and a group of eminent speakers from India and abroad will be interacting with them.
Chief Guest Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR appreciated the efforts of the university in providing an important platform to the participants to interact with eminent scientists of global repute. He also discussed key issues and required action plans for sustainable development of the fisheries sector to achieve envisaged production targets of 22 million tonnes by 2024-25.
Importance of Health Management in Aquaculture
The Guest of Honor, Dr. Madan Mohan, Director & Warden Fisheries Punjab, spotlighted the importance of health management in aquaculture, in special reference to expanding shrimp culture activities in the state, and was impressed to have an integrated approach to address the emerging issue/challenges in collaboration with ICAR and GADVASU.
GADVASU Shared Future R & D Plans
Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Director of Research, GADVASU shared the future R&D plans of the university to promote diversification and intensive aquaculture technologies in the region under a recently sanctioned PMMSY project of 1.39 crores. Applauding the CoF team, Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, and GADVASU acclaimed the training program designed to cover key issues on health management and food/environmental safety for upscaling visionary proficiency of the fisheries fraternity.
Discussion on “One Health”
Accentuating the need for diversification, integration, and intensive technologies in aquaculture, he also discussed the importance of “One Health” and emphasized protecting the environment for the welfare of mankind. The inaugural session of the training program was conceptualized/designed by the faculty of the Department of Aquatic Environment, Drs. Shathanagouda, A.H., Anuj Tyagi, and Naveen Kumar B.T., concluded with vote of thanks by Head of the Department Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur.
