Crops to grow in September

Below we have given a list of crops or vegetables that you can plant in the coming month;

  • Brussels Sprouts

  • Calendulas

  • Garlic

  • Lettuce

  • Radishes

  • Carrot

  • Broccoli

  • Spinach

  • Eggplant

  • Peonies

Brussels Sprouts

Frosty, cool weather is ideal for the Brussels sprouts, which are packed with vitamin C. They prefer fertile, well drained soil and there should be between 18 – 24 inches of space to spread out as they grow eventually.

Calendulas

These vibrant yellow & orange flowers, whose petals can be used in salads, prefer partial shade as well as fertile and well drained soil. Typically, the calendulas grow up to 2 feet tall.

Garlic

Garlic grows best in ground or raised beds; garlic can be planted in the month of September for a crop by the middle of summer. Always choose garlic from two varieties: Soften garlic, which are common in milder climates & contain the multiple cloves in each bulb & hard neck varieties that have much stronger flavor & fail to store as long as their counterparts.

Lettuce

If the soil is good, then the lettuce can thrive during autumn season. The fast-growing vegetable, especially baby lettuce can be ready to harvest in just 30 days from sowing.

Radishes

Radishes are perfect for containers or garden beds; it can grow in as little as 20 days. Just be sure to keep the soil moist & be mindful of proper spacing. One inch apart for the seeds & 12 inches in between the rows.

Carrot

Late summer to early fall is the right or we can say the ideal time to plant this root vegetable. In order to flourish, the carrot need sandy soil accompanied with pH range between 6 & 7.

Broccoli

Broccoli does best with the full sun, along with slightly acidic soil, which is moist & rich in organic matter. Keep the rows at least three feet apart to ensure the optimal growth.

Spinach

Spinach, especially the savoy varieties tend to grow quickly during the cooler months. With rich soil, this nutrient rich vegetable can grow in full sun or partial sun.

Eggplant

They also do well in the cooler temperatures. Always consider growing the eggplant in a large container. There is one caveat through: Their fruit has the tendency to make them top over, so consider them to stakes. And to help keep a flea beetle at bay, make sure that their containers are at least a foot and a half off the ground.

Peonies

Plant this attractive perennial in the fall to enjoy its beauty the next spring. This low maintenance plant needs the full sun & moist soil that drains well. You can plant them two inches below the soil surface & maintain about 3 to 4 feet of distance in between them to allow for good air circulation.
