Sugarcane is cultivated on a large scale in the country. India is the world’s largest consumer and second-largest producer of sugar. A total of 4 Lakh acres of land is under sugarcane cultivation in India and over 2.8 lakh farmers in India are engaged in its cultivation with over 11 crore people directly or indirectly dependent on the sugar industry in the country
However, Sugarcane is also one of the most susceptible crops to various disease and pests. Due to which the farmers suffer a lot.
Scientists of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology Pantnagar have recently developed three varieties of sugarcane. The biggest feature of these varieties is that they have good disease and pest fighting ability. With this variety, farmers can get good and high yields. The varieties developed by the agricultural scientists of Pantnagar University are early maturing sugarcane (Co Pant 12221), normal sugarcane (Co Pant 12226) and Co Pant 13224.
Sugarcane Varieties and its characteristics
Co Pant 12221
This variety of sugarcane has been evaluated by agricultural scientists, in which it has been found that farmers cultivating sugarcane will get good yields from this variety. Better juice quality can also be obtained in this variety. This variety is considered good for both the farmer and the sugar industry.
Co Pant 12226
This variety of sugarcane is capable of fighting diseases, as well as its production capacity is considered to be very good. It is an early maturing variety. Its biggest feature is that it has the ability to give more and better production even in waterlogged and drought prone conditions. Due to these qualities, this variety is considered very beneficial for commercial cultivation.
Co Pant 13224
With this variety developed by agricultural scientists, farmers can get good yields at low cost. This variety of sugarcane is also disease free and is considered good for high production.
Agricultural scientists believe that these varieties can give better yield to the farmers.
