Finger millet, or ragi, is a food crop that is widely cultivated in India. It is particularly significant in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra. Ragi is nutritionally dense, high in calcium, iron, and dietary fibre. It is also used for enhancing child and maternal well-being, as well as arresting malnutrition. Nevertheless, it may take 5 to 7 years to breed better ragi seeds through conventional breeding techniques, arresting further improvement in cultivation.

In order to overcome this lag, scientists created Rapid Ragi, a special speed breeding technique that reduces the crop improvement period. New finger millet varieties can be bred with Rapid Ragi within 2–3 years. This can hugely help Indian farmers who require improved seeds soon to manage current farming issues.

What is Rapid Ragi?

Rapid Ragi is founded on a scientific technique known as speed breeding, where plants are cultivated under specific conditions so that the growth is accelerated. While using this technique, crops are provided 22 hours of artificial light a day, with controlled temperature, humidity, and even carbon dioxide levels. These conditions result in plants growing, flowering, and setting seeds much more rapidly than would be possible in an open field.

As opposed to genetic modification, Rapid Ragi does not modify the inherent structure of the plant. It employs conventional breeding methods but with a quicker and more efficient environment. This makes the seeds safe, natural, and acceptable to Indian farmers and consumers.

Applying it to ragi, Rapid Ragi facilitates several growing cycles within one year. This means researchers can test and choose better varieties much quicker, enabling the provision of improved seeds to the farmers within a shorter time.

Why is Rapid Ragi Important for Indian Farming?

With climate change introducing unpredictable weather, erratic rainfall, and increasing temperatures, farmers need to produce crops that are both fast and robust. Rapid Ragi offers a pragmatic solution by facilitating the breeding of finger millet varieties that are resistant to drought, pest-tolerant, and early-maturing.

Following this protocol, breeders can reduce the time it takes to develop a variety from 5–7 years to 2–3 years. This implies that farmers have access to improved seeds earlier, without long delays. These improved varieties also respond well to stress, enabling farmers to minimize crop loss during droughts or late rains.

Ragi is also famous for its capability to thrive in barren soils and drought conditions, thereby proving to be a savior for most of the farmers in low-rainfall regions. By planting Rapid Ragi, these farmers are able to cultivate a sturdier, quicker, and healthier crop that not only provides for their own family but also generates greater earnings from markets.

Advantages for Farmers Growing Rapid Ragi

For Indian farmers, there are a number of obvious advantages to Rapid Ragi. The new ragi varieties produced using this approach mature early. This enables them to avoid drought seasons and be subject to flexible sowing and harvesting times. Farmers are also able to produce several crops in one year or incorporate ragi into mixed cropping systems more readily.

The new varieties are usually higher in protein, iron, and calcium content. This enhances the health of the farming communities and assists government nutrition programs.

Rapid Ragi is also economically advantageous as it employs conventional breeding and does not need costly gene editing or chemical input. With support from the government and universities, the price for developing and obtaining these seeds can remain low. Farmers can gain without paying extra.

To achieve this, agricultural research centres can establish low-cost Rapid Ragi units in rural villages. Farmers and rural youth can be trained on how to cultivate and manage these varieties through training programs. Scaling up seed production and distribution can be achieved through public-private partnerships.

Challenges and Practical Solutions

Although the advantages of Rapid Ragi are numerous, there are also some challenges involved. The initial cost of establishing controlled environments using artificial lights and temperature systems is prohibitive. This can make the technology challenging to implement in small villages.

To counteract this, governments can provide subsidies, and rapid Ragi centers can be constructed based on community initiatives to share resources. Solar-powered systems can also be used to minimize electricity costs.

Another challenge is farmers' lack of awareness. Some of them might be unaware of speed breeding or its potential to benefit them. Training camps, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) activities, and demonstration plots can be established to create awareness.

Lastly, the developed seeds of Rapid Ragi need to be made available at a rapid and large scale. Local seed banks, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and self-help groups need to be strengthened to ensure timely availability of these improved seeds.
