Kufri Mohan, developed by the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Modipuram, is a premium table potato variety released in 2016. This high-yielding variety is tailored for cultivation in the Indo-Gangetic plains, offering resistance to diseases like late blight, excellent tuber quality, and superior storage capabilities, making it a farmer's ideal choice.
Kufri Mohan: Origin and Development
Kufri Mohan is a result of careful breeding, originating from a cross between MS/92-1090, an indigenous hybrid with field resistance to late blight, and CP1704, an exotic variety with strong disease resistance. The breeding began in 2003-04, and after extensive trials under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Potato, it was officially released in 2016.
Agronomic Management
Land Preparation:
For optimal growth, deep ploughing (2-3 times) is essential to aerate the soil. Leveling ensures uniform tuber growth, while the addition of 5-10 tons/ha of farmyard manure improves soil fertility.
Planting Time:
Mid-October to early November is ideal for planting in the Indo-Gangetic plains.
Sowing & Spacing:
Plant 35-40 quintals per hectare with tubers weighing between 40-60g. Maintain row spacing of 60 cm and 20 cm between plants for even tuber distribution.
Fertilization:
-
Nitrogen: 219 kg/ha (50% at planting and the remainder during earthing up)
-
Phosphorus: 40 kg/ha
-
Potassium: 81 kg/ha
Irrigation:
Use flood or controlled irrigation methods, ensuring sufficient moisture during critical growth stages like sprouting, tuber initiation, and bulking.
Pest and Disease Management
Major pests affecting crops include the Stem Borer, which causes dead heart symptoms, and the Brown Planthopper (BPH), known for causing hopper burn that reduces tuber quality. As for diseases, Late Blight is a concern, although Kufri Mohan exhibits moderate resistance to it; preventive sprays of Metalaxyl + Mancozeb are recommended to control its spread. Additionally, Bacterial Blight can be managed through the application of Streptomycin.
Harvesting and Yield
-
Maturity Signs:
Tubers turn golden yellow, with moisture content ranging from 20-22%.
-
Harvesting Method:
Manual harvesting followed by threshing and winnowing.
-
Expected Yield:
Under optimal conditions, Kufri Mohan can yield 35-40 tons per hectare.
Recommended Growing Regions
Kufri Mohan is best suited for the Indo-Gangetic plains, covering the major potato-growing belts from Punjab to West Bengal. It thrives in fertile, irrigated regions, offering consistent yields.
What Sets Kufri Mohan Apart?
Kufri Mohan stands out for several key reasons. It has a high yield potential, producing 35-40 tons per hectare with over 90% marketable tubers, making it a profitable option for farmers. Its moderate resistance to late blight ensures its suitability for disease-prone areas. The variety also boasts superior tuber quality, yielding white-cream, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and white flesh, which are perfect for the table market.
Additionally, Kufri Mohan has excellent keeping quality, with low post-harvest losses and a longer shelf life than older varieties, enhancing its marketability. Its wide adaptability across various agro-climatic zones ensures consistent performance.
