The Kalanamak rice was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag by the Government of India in the year 2012 under the Uttar Pradesh region.  The cultivation of this rice is approved in 11 districts within the 7th Zone of Uttar Pradesh which includes three districts - Gorakhpur (Deoria, Gorakhpur, Mahrajganj, and Siddharth Nagar), Basti (Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Siddharth Nagar), and Devipatan (Bahraich, Balrampur, Gonda, and Shravasti).
