Don't you love taking vacations to your favorite places? On the other hand, you adore your plants as well. Regardless matter how enthusiastic you are about gardening and how much you like plants, everyone needs time to chill and rest.
On the other side, your wonderful garden will not take care of itself. Vacations of a week or longer will demand the implementation of specific methods to maintain the health and long-term survival of your plants.
So, to help you relax while you're away from your plants, we've compiled a list of five easy tricks for keeping your balcony plants alive while you're gone.
1. Water the plants before leaving
Just before you depart, water the plants. Keep both indoor and outdoor potted plants in a cool, dark spot out of direct sunshine so that the water doesn't evaporate too quickly in the presence of too much light and the soil stays moist for longer. Keep all of the plants together so that your acquaintance, who will be responsible for watering them while you are away, doesn't forget.
2. DIY drip system
In a plastic bottle, drill many holes at the top of the bottle. Before you go for your trip, fill the bottle halfway with water and turn it upside down. Place it in the soil so that the holes in the bottle are covered by the dirt. When the soil becomes dry, water will gently flow from the bottle into the soil, hydrating it. Because of its effectiveness, this method easily saves time, money, and water.
3. Give your plants a bath
If your pots have adequate drainage, you may give them a wash while you're gone. Simply fill a bathtub, sink, or other container with a few inches of water and set the potted plant in it (make sure it has drainage holes). The plants will have gotten just what they need—never too little, never too much. The plants will be able to survive for at least a week if you do this.
4. Keep away from direct sunlight
Ensure that your plants are not exposed to direct sunlight. If they are planted in a flowerbed with direct sunlight access, create an artificial shade with a cover of thin white sheets, ensuring that air is distributed throughout the garden. Another alternative is to bring them inside your home and create a mini-greenhouse with ventilation slots out of a clear plastic bag.
5. Ask your friend/ neighbor to plant sit them
If your trip is going to be too long, take the help of a friend or neighbor to water your plants while you're away.
