Worst Locust Attack in Maharashtra since 1993; Alert in Mathura and Delhi as Swarm Expands Area

After Amphan created havoc in Bengal and Odisha, now its locust attack which has led to total wreckage in Maharashtra. As per reports, Maharashtra has witnessed the first major locust attack since 1993. Moreover, many parts of India are under worst locust attack and the administration has issued alert for Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Mathura. As per reports, the migratory pests have invaded eastern Maharashtra where four to five villages have come under attack from the locusts.

After Amphan created havoc in Bengal and Odisha, now its locust attack which has led to total wreckage in Maharashtra. As per reports, Maharashtra has witnessed first major locust attack since 1993. Moreover, many parts of India are under worst locust attack and the administration has issued alert for Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Mathura. As per reports, the migratory pests have invaded eastern Maharashtra where four to five villages have come under attack from the locusts.

As per sources, the district and agriculture department personnel in Maharashtra have initiated chemical spraying on crops and vegetation to save them from the migratory pests. The main affected areas include 22 villages across Morshi and Warud talukas in Amravati; Ashti taluka in upper Wardha district; and Katol, Kalmeshwar and Narkhed talukas in Nagpur.

“The swarm of desert locusts entered the state from Amravati district. It then went to Wardha and now it is in Nagpur’s Katol tehsil,” Joint Director of the agriculture department, Ravindra Bhosale, told news agency PTI.

However, the district administration has formed a task force to deal with any potential locust attack in the district. The administration decided to go for early preparation keeping in view the growing locust threat.

After crossing Pakistan, swarms of locusts entered India through Rajasthan on April 11. On Monday, locusts entered some residential areas of the Jaipur city.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, the district administration has reported forming a task force to deal with any potential locust attack in the district.
