Post Graduate student, Prapti Sudan from College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) won the ‘Best Poster Presentation Award’ at the 1st Indian Fisheries Outlook-2022 on “Priming Indian Fisheries in Attaining Sustainable Development Goals” held at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore.
The conference was jointly organized by ICAR-CIFRI, Professional Fisheries Graduate Forum (PFGF), Mumbai, and Inland Fisheries Society of India (IFSI), Barrackpore.
During her M.F.Sc., Prapti Sudan worked to isolate and identify Vibrio spp. with disease-causing abilities from inland saline shrimp culture farms of Punjab. She carried out her research work under the guidance of Dr. Anuj Tyagi, Assistant Professor.
Prapti also studied the virulence genes and multi-drug resistance in Vibrio spp. as well as the ability of bacteriophages to kill multi-drug resistant Vibrio spp.
Her poster on “Evaluation of antimicrobial resistance in inland saline shrimp culture areas with special reference to Vibrio parahaemolyticus” was adjudicated “Best Poster” in the “Fish Health and Aquatic Environment Management” category.
She received the award in the presence of dignitaries like Dr. W. S. Lakra and Dr. Dilip Kumar, former Directors and Vice-Chancellors, ICAR-CIFE, Dr. Ambekar Eknath, former Director-General, NACA, Bangkok, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI) and Dr. B. B. Nayak, General Secretary, PFGF).
Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Head, Department of Aquatic Environment, COF congratulated the team for winning stellar accolades and reinforcing the university’s stature among a galaxy of scientists of national and international repute.
Complementing the team, Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, COF informed us that biocontrol of deadly pathogens with natural bacteriophages will be offering a promising solution to health management and antibiotic resistance in the fisheries sector.
Endorsing the practical applicability of said work, Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Director of Research, GADVASU also acclaimed the team. Acknowledging the achievement and importance of the said work in developing effective organic strategies in aquatic health management, Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU informed us that the university is committed to develop such eco-friendly technologies for the livestock and fisheries sector.
