USDA Report: U.S. Winter Wheat Production Forecasted to Rise by 2% in 2024

The latest USDA Crop Production report indicates a 2% rise in U.S. winter wheat production for 2024, with an estimated yield of 1.28 billion bushels. Additionally, projections show significant increases in Hard Red Winter and White Winter varieties.

According to the latest Crop Production report released by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), U.S. farmers are projected to yield 1.28 billion bushels of winter wheat this year. This forecast marks a 2% increase from the previous year's production figures.

As of May 1, the anticipated average yield stands at 50.7 bushels per acre, a slight uptick from last year's average of 50.6 bushels per acre. Moreover, Hard Red Winter production is expected to surge by 17% to 705 million bushels compared to the previous year. Conversely, Soft Red Winter production is forecasted to decline by 23% to 344 million bushels.

Meanwhile, White Winter production is estimated to rise by 16% to 229 million bushels. Of the White Winter category, Hard White accounts for 17.3 million bushels, while Soft White comprises 211 million bushels.

Shifting the focus to citrus fruits, the all-orange forecast for the 2023-2024 season is projected at 2.69 million tons, marking a 2% decrease from the previous forecast but a 5% increase from the final utilization of the 2022-2023 season. In Florida, the all-orange forecast stands at 17.8 million boxes (801,000 tons), reflecting a 5% decrease from the previous forecast but a 13% rise from last season's final utilization.

Moreover, U.S. almond production (shelled basis) is anticipated to reach 3.00 billion pounds, marking a substantial 21% increase from the previous year.

The data presented in the report is the result of surveys conducted with approximately 8,300 producers across the United States. In addition to production figures, the monthly Crop Production report also includes information on the area planted and harvested, yield, and a weather summary, providing a comprehensive overview of agricultural conditions nationwide.
