The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is now inviting applications for its highly regarded Master of Marine and Antarctic Science program for the 2025 academic year. This unique postgraduate course offers students an unparalleled opportunity to study marine science with a distinct focus on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, all while being based in one of the world’s most pristine natural environments.

The program, hosted by the University’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), is designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in marine and Antarctic science, including aquaculture, fisheries, marine biology, and environmental science. UTAS offers a truly global perspective on marine research, combining hands-on learning experiences with access to cutting-edge facilities and internationally renowned experts in the field.

What sets this program apart is its emphasis on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, making it the only master's degree of its kind in the world. Students will benefit from UTAS's location, with access to Australia's largest fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood industries, as well as the Southern Ocean, which serves as a natural marine laboratory right at their doorstep.

Program Highlights and Structure

The Master of Marine and Antarctic Science program is delivered full-time in English over two years. The first year includes eight core and specialization units, covering topics such as Fisheries Management, Marine Biology, Governance and Policy, and Sustainable Aquaculture. In the second year, students can choose between a Research Stream or a Professional Stream, each offering different pathways to further develop expertise and career readiness.

Students will also undertake a significant research or professional project, depending on their stream, along with practical field experience, including study trips to the Southern Ocean. These opportunities enable students to build not only academic knowledge but also real-world skills that are highly valued in the job market.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants should have completed a Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science or equivalent, such as a Bachelor of Science with a major in life sciences (e.g., biology, marine biology, environmental science, or ecology).

Additionally, international students must meet English language proficiency requirements, such as:

  • IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.0, with no band less than 6.0

  • TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 72 with minimum scores in specific areas

  • PTE Academic: Minimum overall score of 50 with no score lower than 50

Application and Deadlines

Although there is no fixed application deadline, students are advised to apply for their Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) 2.5 to 3 months before the course start date.

The program will commence in Semester 1 (24 February 2025) and Semester 2 (21 July 2025), and students can apply through the official UTAS application portal. The estimated tuition fee for the program is approximately AUD 94,813.
