Turmeric is a staple in every traditional Indian kitchen, and it's used to heal a wide range of maladies at home. It's also known as a panacea. Curcumin, which is produced from turmeric, has now been discovered to be useful in the treatment of cancer by experts at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).

Researchers have created nano-curcumin structures that encapsulate RNAi and other compounds that aid in tissue targeting. "The proposed bio-drug is non-toxic, biocompatible, and has a greater absorption efficiency," according to the researchers. In two separate mice models of colon and breast cancer, it exhibits effective site-specific delivery with tumour regression," they said.

RNAi-Based Therapy

RNA interference (RNAi), a type of gene silencing, is a promising method for treating chronic diseases like cancer in a targeted and focused manner. "One of the biggest hurdles against employing RNAi-based therapy in biological systems is the absence of safe and effective delivery mechanisms for RNAi molecules," said Lekha Dinesh Kumar, a member of the research team.

CSIR-Polymer NCL's Science and Engineering Division collaborated with the team. The results of this study were reported in the journal Nanoscale.

"Cancer is one of the top causes of death in the world, and it is associated with financial hardship and social disgrace." "The search for plausible therapeutic treatments to replace non-specific chemo medicines has recently resulted in the creation of novel cancer-fighting techniques," she explained.

Other Benefits of Turmeric:

  • Curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The majority of research uses turmeric extracts that have been standardized to have high levels of curcumin.

  • Chronic inflammation is linked to a number of common problems. Curcumin has the ability to decrease the number of compounds that are known to play important roles in inflammation, but its bioavailability has to be improved.

  • It increases levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which promotes the creation of new neurons and may aid in the prevention of several degenerative brain diseases.

  • Curcumin has been found to enhance different aspects of the degenerative process of Alzheimer's disease by crossing the blood-brain barrier.
