Agricultural scientists in India have achieved a big success. After almost 23 years of continuous hard work, a new variety of lady finger (Bhindi) has been developed. This latest variety has been developed by the scientists of Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR) located in Uttar Pradesh. The most important thing about this lady finger is that it is RED in colour instead of GREEN and that is why it has been named as 'Kashi Lalima'.
New Variety ladyfinger
This big achievement of the Indian Vegetable Research Institute, Varanasi is very significant for the agriculture sector. According to the media reports, scientists have said that this lady finger is full of the nutrients like anti-oxidant, iron and calcium. Scientists have developed many such varieties in the past too. The cost of this new red-coloured lady finger is more than the normal lady finger. The market price of different varieties of Kashi Lalima ladyfinger will range from Rs. 100 to 500 per kg.
No more export from Western countries
As we know that in India, green lady fingers are common and farmers also cultivate that only. The red lady finger is generally found in Western countries and if needed, India imports this variety from any of these nations. But, as this variety has been developed in India, there will be no need to import it from other countries. Now farmers here will be able to produce it themselves.
How and when it started?
The Indian Institute of Vegetable Research said that work for this had started in 1995-96. But we finally got success now. The seeds of Kashi Lalima Bhindi will be available to the common people from December onwards. This new variety of lady finger will not only benefit farmers of the country but also its people, who will be able to consume a vegetable full of rich nutrients.
