APEDA, in collaboration with the National Plant Protection Organisation of India, US-APHIS, the Maharashtra government, and the Agriculture Marketing Board, along with the National Research Centre on Pomegranate, achieved a significant milestone by facilitating the first trial consignment of pomegranates to the US via air route.
This successful shipment involved the "Bhagwa" variety of pomegranates from Maharashtra, known for their high antioxidant content. The consignment, consisting of 150 boxes weighing 450 kg, was sent to New York from the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai by APEDA-registered INI farms, one of the prominent exporters of fruits and vegetables.
Previously, the US had imposed a ban on Indian pomegranates in 2017-18 due to concerns over fruit fly infestation in the pomegranate seeds.
However, after the Indian government's efforts to address these concerns and meet the required quality standards, the ban was lifted in 2022.
Indian pomegranate production has been experiencing remarkable growth at a rate of 20 to 25 per cent annually, as stated by APEDA. Both domestic and international demands are on the rise, with India becoming a significant player in markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. India's unique varieties of pomegranates have helped it stand out amidst the global competition.
Among the importing countries, the UAE holds the top position, accounting for nearly 32 per cent of India's pomegranate exports worldwide. This signifies the country's increasing significance as a major supplier in the global pomegranate market.
