Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 10 September 2020 launched the Rs 20,050 crore- PMMSY (Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana) in 21 states that includes Bihar will help boost fisheries exports, generate more employment opportunities and double farmers’ income.
PM Modi also introduced a mobile app called e-Gopala and many initiatives linked to studies & research in fisheries production, animal husbandry, dairy and agriculture in Bihar.
Prime Minister said, "The motive behind all these schemes that has been launched today is to empower our villages & make Aatmanirbhar Bharat (India self-reliant) in the 21st century”.
The PMMSY is being launched in twenty-one states with more than Rs 20,000 crore to be spend in the next 4 to 5 years, PM said. He added that it is for the first time after independence that such a big scheme has been introduced in the country for the fisheries sector.
Under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Modi told many facilities have been inaugurated in Purnia, Sitamarhi, Patna, Madhepura, Samastipur and Kishanganj in Bihar.
Prime Minister said the PMMSY scheme will ensure new infrastructure, modern equipment & access to new markets to fish producers. It will also improve avenues for increasing income apart from farming. Fisheries exports are likely to double in the next 4 to 5 years, Modi added.
The PMMSY, with an estimated investment of Rs 20,050 crore, would be implemented from 2020-21 to 2024-25 as part of Aatmanirbhar Bharat package.
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana aims at increasing fish production by an additional 70 lakh tonnes and boosting fisheries export earnings to Rs 1 lakh crore by 2024-25. PMMSY will also help in generating additional 55 lakhs direct / indirect employment opportunities in the fisheries and allied sector.
Besides fisheries, PM Modi said the Centre is promoting the dairy sector via innovation and new products so that farmers as well as cattle breeders get extra income.
