Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the lives of people in the North-East state of Assam would be better as they have been allotted land ‘pattas’ (certificates) on 23 January 2021.
PM Modi asserted, “The land ownership certificates (pattas) will guarantee their ‘Swabhiman’ (pride), Swadheenta (freedom) & Suraksha (protection). It is sad that even after so many years of Independence, lakhs of indigenous families in Assam did not have legal rights to their land. They remained landless. But now their lives will be better”.
Modi distributed over 1 lakh land pattas at a programme at Jerenga Pathar in Assam’s Sivasagar district. More than 2.5 lakh others were given the certificates earlier. The prime Minister said when the BJP government came to power in the year 2016, there were over 6 lakh such families with no legal rights to their land.

Modi further said, “They (those allotted land pattas) will now enjoy the benefits of many central government schemes including PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Kisan Credit Card and other schemes and easily get loans from the banks”.
Mentioning Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika’s couplets that means “mother earth, give me a place at your feet, What would a farmer do without you? Without land he will be helpless,” Prime Minister said that the Centre’s aim is to give legal rights to the land of the state’s indigenous population.
He added that “Rapid development as well as social protection of the tribals in Assam has been the commitment of Central Government. Many steps have also been taken to promote Assamese language & literature.”
