The Ernakulam Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) plans to promote snap melon, a highly nutritious local variety, as one of the best heat remedies, even as demand for fruit juices rises to combat the summer heat. During the summer, snap melon (pottu vellari) is a locally grown fruit, whereas the majority of fruits available in the domestic market come from other states.
The KVK, which is part of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), focuses on increasing public awareness of the nutritional value of fruit and juice.
"During the summer season, many people are still unaware of the nutritional value and efficacy of snap melon." "This fruit is high in beta carotene, folic acid, potassium, and vitamin C," said Shinoj Subramanian, KVK president.
Precision Farming:
Snap melon is grown in paddy fields covering 600 acres in many parts of the district, including Nedumbasseri, Manjali, Kadungalloor, Alangad, and Karumalloor, and is harvested after the paddy harvest.
"This year, the KVK is demonstrating precision farming of snap melon with the participation of local farmers to reduce labour requirements and increase productivity," Dr. Subramanian said.
On February 24, the KVK will hold a mega harvest festival of snap melon cultivated in various parts of Alangad Grama Panchayat as part of its awareness-cum-promotional campaign.
During the Alangad festival, KVK will showcase the snap melon and introduce the public to its juices in a variety of flavours. Furthermore, at the festival, the experts will lead sessions on the preparation of the juice varieties using various recipes.
"KVK's initiative also aims to support fruit farmers and popularize snap melon precision farming." "Those interested in starting a snap melon farm will receive the necessary guidance from KVK," Shinoj Subramanian said.
