Planting operations have progressed in India so far and as per Government of India reports the net cropped area as on September 4 had reached 1095.38 Lakh ha. As compared to the area sown last year’s corresponding period, net area coverage currently remains 6.32% higher. Area sown last year at this time of year was 1030.32 Lakh ha. There has been an increase of nearly 8.3% in cultivation of Rice. On the other hand, Oilseeds’ planted area has registered a jump of roughly 12 per cent. Amongst Kharif basket, area covered under Oilseeds and Rice has been the most till now.

Rice: Acreage has increased by 31.64 Lakh ha roughly year on year. The government data revealed 396.18 lakh ha area coverage under rice as compared to 365.92 lakh ha, during the corresponding period of last year.

Pulses: In Pulses, total cropped area presently remains higher by 6.11 Lakh ha versus last year’s corresponding period. About 136.79 lakh ha area coverage under pulses is reported this versus 130.68 lakh ha, as reported last year same period.

Coarse Cereals: In case of coarse grains 2.89 lakh ha more area has been covered, as against last year. Latest data says that 179.36 lakh ha area has been covered under coarse cereals so far, while last year it was 176.25 lakh ha, for the corresponding period.

Oilseeds: Sowing reported on 194.75 lakh ha area against 174.00 lakh ha area of last year i.e. area coverage therefore increases by 11.93%.

Sugarcane: About 52.38 Lakh ha area coverage is reported under sugarcane as compared to 51.71 lakh ha, during the corresponding period of last year. Year on year this indicates an increase of 0.67 lakh ha, or roughly 1.3%.

Cotton: Area coverage has now reached 128.95 lakh ha area against 124.90 lakh ha area of last year i.e. increase in area coverage by 3.24%

Jute & Mesta: Cropped area till now is 97 lakh ha area against 6.86 lakh ha area i.e. increases in area coverage by 1.68% versus last year’s corresponding period.

The Agriculture Ministry also reported that the actual rainfall received in the country was 795.0 mm against normal of 730.8 mm i.e. rise in 9% during the period from 01.06.2020 to 03.09.2020. Water levels in the country remains satisfactory and as reported by Central Water Commission, as on 03.09.2020, the live water storage available in 123 reservoirs in the country is 104% of live storage of corresponding period of last year and 120% of storage of average of last ten years. Thanks to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and State Governments for putting all possible efforts in successful implementation of mission programs and flagship schemes. The Agriculture Ministry has given credit goes to farmers for timely action and adoption of technologies and taking benefit of ongoing government schemes.
