India to produce 89.5 lakh tonnes of Mustard Seeds in the ongoing Rabi Season: COOIT

Central Organization for Oil Industry and Trade (COOIT) has estimated 89.5 lakh tonnes of mustard seed to be produced in the country in the ongoing rabi season of 2020-21 against 75 lakh tonnes recorded last year.

Central Organization for Oil Industry and Trade (COOIT) has estimated 89.5 lakh tonnes of mustard seed to be produced in the country in the ongoing rabi season of 2020-21 against 75 lakh tonnes recorded last year.

COOIT on Sunday announced its forecast for the production of mustard and other oilseed in the country in an annual event, 41st Rabi Seminar on Oil Seed, Oil Trade and Industry organized by the industry body in Delhi. Participants and researchers of the oil industry across the country attended the seminar and discussed their observation and estimates for oilseed production.

Commenting on this year’s production estimates, COOIT Chairman Mr. Babulal Data said, “In the ongoing Rabi season, farmers have been favourably inclined towards cultivation of Mustard resulting in higher sowing. The weather too has largely been favourable, and hence, per hectare production is also expected to be higher. Accordingly, we will see record production of Mustard seed this year, which will benefit all stakeholders’ farmers, consumers and edible oil industry.”

Mustard Seed Production in Rajasthan, Gujarat

As per the COOIT’s estimates, mustard seed production is likely to remain at 35 lakh tonnes and taramira at 2 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 against 32 lakh tonnes and 6 lakh tonnes (carry forwarded from last year) respectively in Rajasthan, the largest mustard seed grower in the country during last rabi season.

In Gujarat, mustard seed production has been estimated at 4 lakh tonnes against 3 lakh tonnes a year ago.

Mustard Seed Production in MP, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal

Mustard seed production is expected to remain at 10 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh put together in 2020-21 against 6.5 lakh tonnes in both states clubbed together last year.

COOIT has estimated mustard seed output at 5 lakh tonnes in the ongoing rabi season in West Bengal against 4.5 lakh tonnes a year ago.

Mustard Seed Production in Punjab, Haryana

Mustard seed production is expected to remain at 10.5 lakh tonnes this year against 10 lakh tonnes last year.

Mustard Seed Production in UP, Bihar & Eastern states

Production of mustard seed is also expected to increase in Uttar Pradesh and also in Eastern states including Bihar this year.

COOIT has estimated 15 lakh tonnes mustard seed in Uttar Pradesh and 10 lakh tonnes in Bihar and other eastern states this rabi season against 13 lakh tonnes and 7 lakh tonnes respectively last year.

Established in 1958, COOIT is engaged in the development and growth of the vegetable oil sector which is crucial to the economy.

The COOIT is the national apex body representing the interests of the entire vegetable oil sector in the country and its members include state level associations, prominent manufacturing/business concerns in Industry, Trade and Export Houses etc.
