The issue of Crop residue burning
The crop residue burning issue has become a major environmental problem that not only causes health issues but also contributes to global warming. There are some sustainable methods like composting and biochar production that helps in curtailing the problem while retaining the nutrients present in the crop residue in soil.
Earlier, to support the efforts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi State Governments deal with air pollution & to subsidize machinery needed for in-situ management of crop residue via agriculture mechanization - a Central Scheme for the period 2018-19 to 2019-20 was implemented by the Ministry in all these States.
