As a result of intensifying outrage over contentious Farm Bills passed by the Centre, farmers in parts of Punjab and Haryana burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday on the occasion of Dussehra. The biggest Hindu festival, where the effigy of Ravana is set on fire to showcase the victory of truth against darkness, angry farmers replaces Ravana's effigy with PM Modi.
Moreover, farmers in Punjab and Haryana burnt effigies of PM Modi as "Kisaan ka Ravana" expressing anger over the Bill.
According to reports, farmers erected a statue of Ravana, with a face of Modi, flanked by the richest Indian entrepreneurs Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani in Punjab's Bathinda.
Media reports says that farmers gathered near the Multipurpose Sports Stadium, where a huge effigy having photographs of Modi, Ambani and Adani was burnt. Similar protests were held at several other places in the district, including at government school stadiums in Sangat, Nathana and Maur, PWD Ground near the railway station in Rampura and Tractor Mandi in Talwandi Sabo.
Similarly, in Sangrur, Barnala, Malerkotla and Mandi Ahmedgarh farmers also burnt effigies of the PM and business groups’ owners.
In Ferozepur too, the Kisan Majdoor Sangharsh Committee burnt the effigies, demanding the immidiate rollback of the farm laws.
According to reports, farmers’ organisations had given a call to burn effigies of the Central Government and owners of the big business groups with no headways in talks with the Centre on the farm laws.
