A plant that survives for more than two years is referred to as a perennial plant or simply perennial. The phrase is frequently used to distinguish a plant from annuals and biennials, which have shorter lifespans. The phrase is also frequently used to distinguish perennial plants from trees and shrubs, which are technically perennials but have little to no woody development.
Popular herbaceous perennials include bellflowers, chrysanthemums, columbines, dahlias, larkspurs, hollyhocks, phlox, pinks, poppies, and primroses.
