Anything abiotic, according to science, is not alive. Temperature, ocean currents, and humidity are examples of abiotic factors in an ecosystem.
In a number of ways, abiotic components play an essential role in the world. From the sand on the beach to the stones on a mountain, to the sunshine pouring down on you and the chemical makeup of the earth beneath your feet, anything that isn't biologically alive is abiotic. Abiotic is derived from the word a-, which means "without," and biotic, which means "pertaining to life."
