  • IMD Issues Yellow Alert In These States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains and snowfall in various states, including J&K and Himachal Pradesh, during the next several days. The weather service in Himachal Pradesh issued a yellow signal for heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours on Tuesday. Yesterday, Surender Paul, IMD (head), Himachal Pradesh, informed ANI, "Shimla, Chamba, Lahaul Spiti, Kullu, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Mandi have all been issued with a 48-hour yellow alert. There's a good chance that these districts will also get a lot of snow."

  • Darjeeling Tea Output Sinks To Low Record in 2021

Darjeeling tea production, one of the world's most popular tea varietals, fell to 6.5 million kg in 2021, the lowest level on record and less than half of the 13 million kg produced two decades before. Climate change, garden closures, excessive absenteeism among tea workers, lost export markets in 2017 owing to agitation in the hills, and a lack of effort to promote Darjeeling tea in the home market have all contributed to the decline. Planters believe that unless the government comes up with a recovery package, Darjeeling tea, the Indian tea industry's flag bearer, may fade away like the teas from Himachal Pradesh's Palampur.
